PROGRAM
Masatora Goya
"Onibi" (鬼火 ) for ryuteki, hichiriki, and sho (2022)
From the composer: "Onibi" could be translated as a "ghost fire", a kind of foxfire they used to believe that the souls of the deceased are floating around in a field. In this work, you are a newborn ghost fire, trying to remember who it was, but gradually the consciousness fading away. My attempt here is to realize the theatrical imagination of Noh through the sound of Gagaku, for the two Japanese traditions existed separately in history, as well as interpreting them through the filter of Western chamber music.
Commissioned by Thomas Piercy for “Tokyo to New York” and “Random Access Music” and made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature, and by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

About EAMCW
East Asian Music in the Contemporary World (EAMCW) is a creative-research initiative founded in 2025 by Hippocrates Cheng and colleagues, in collaboration with North America–based musicians specializing in East Asian instruments and scholars focusing on East Asian music and its contemporary expressions.
The project aims to promote contemporary music for East Asian instruments and provides a vibrant platform where performers, scholars, students, and community members can experience, reflect on, and engage in dialogue about East Asian music in fresh and innovative contexts. Looking ahead, EAMCW plans to commission new works and present existing compositions by composers from around the world, further expanding and showcasing the repertoire for East Asian instruments. EAMCW also aims to cultivate collaborations with musicians and scholars in North America and beyond.
